Text of the invitation of Natalie Gutgesell:
“The internationally renowned Berlin artist couple Römer + Römer depicts scenes of world culture in traditions, customs, festivals, and everyday snapshots. Nina and Torsten Römer create each of their monumental paintings together using thousands of individual dots of color. The two artists embody cultural transfer in their imagery and in their interweaving of the paradigm shifts in media and art history. Their painting style embodies an organic connection between the modern digital image and the impressionist image of the 19th century.
Römer + Römer depict people on the streets of Japan, at the Burning Man Festival in Nevada, at the carnival in Rio, at cosplay events, or in environmental protection campaigns. Moments of protest stand alongside moments of joyful celebration, which in turn have a deeper meaning for the culture of the respective country. Almost all cultures around the world celebrate the symbolism of light. This also inspired the title of the exhibition: The Great Lantern.
With their works, Römer + Römer pay tribute to the connections between cultures around the world, shared encounters, the preservation of culture, and human individuality. Every current event always has a connection to its past. The exhibition is linked to the 200th anniversary of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which continues to maintain cultural networks throughout Europe to this day.”
Finissage: Sunday, April 26, 2026, 3 p.m.
Nina and Torsten Römer will be signing the current annual edition live.
